Protect Your Family: Free Radon Test Kits Available at Ford County Public Health Department

Radon is a silent, invisible threat in many homes across Illinois — but testing is simple, free, and can save lives. The Ford County Public Health Department (FCPHD) is proud to offer free radon test kits to all Ford County residents as part of its ongoing Radon Program.

What Is Radon?

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that forms naturally when uranium, thorium, or radium in rocks, soil, and groundwater break down. It seeps into homes and buildings through cracks in foundations, floors, walls, sump pits, and around pipes or construction joints. Because you can’t see, smell, or taste it, radon can build up to dangerous levels indoors without anyone knowing.

Health Risks Associated with Radon

Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels damages the cells lining your lungs and is a major health concern. Radon is the number 2 cause of lung cancer in the United States, responsible for more than 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Surgeon General). It is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. The risk is even greater for current or former smokers.

Health effects may not appear for years, but the good news is that testing and simple fixes can dramatically lower your risk.

Ford County Public Health Department’s Free Radon Test Kit Program

The Ford County Public Health Department provides free short-term radon test kits right at our office. Testing your home (or office) is the only way to know your radon levels. The U.S. EPA recommends taking action if levels are 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher.

How to get and use your free kit:

  1. Stop by or call the Ford County Public Health Department to pick up your free kit (no appointment needed).
  2. Place the kit in the lowest livable level of your home (usually basement or first floor) for the recommended time (typically 2–7 days).
  3. Seal and mail the kit to the certified lab using the pre-paid envelope.
  4. Receive your results — our staff can help explain them and guide you on next steps if levels are elevated.

Next Steps If Levels Are High

If your test shows elevated radon, licensed mitigation professionals can install effective systems (often for $800–$1,500) that reduce levels by up to 99%. Retest every 2 years or after major home changes. The FCPHD can connect you with resources from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) Radon Program.

Every home should be tested — no exceptions. Don’t wait until National Radon Action Month (January) — protect your family now with a free test kit from the Ford County Public Health Department.
