Internal Protocol: The 10‑Minute De‑Brief

Because the call may be over—but the impact isn’t.

The 10‑Minute De‑Brief is a simple but critical internal protocol designed to support first responders immediately following a high‑stress or emotionally charged call. It is not therapy, not an investigation, and not about blame. It is about resetting, reconnecting, and protecting our people.

What It Is

A short, structured conversation—conducted within minutes of clearing a call—focused on:

  • Safety
  • Mental reset
  • Team connection

It takes 10 minutes or less, requires no special training, and can be led by a supervisor, senior responder, or designated peer.

How It Works

The De‑Brief follows three simple steps:

  1. Check the Team

    • Is everyone physically safe?
    • Any immediate medical concerns?
    • Anyone need a quick break before the next call?
  2. Acknowledge the Call

    • “That was a tough one.”
    • “What stood out for you?”
    • No critique. No replay. Just acknowledgment.
  3. Reset and Release

    • One grounding breath together.
    • A reminder: The call is over.
    • A clear transition back to service or downtime.

Why It Matters

  • Reduces accumulated stress and emotional carryover
  • Reinforces peer support and trust
  • Helps prevent long-term burnout and silent struggle
  • Sends a clear message: your well-being matters

What It Is NOT

  • Not a performance review
  • Not a critical incident investigation
  • Not mandatory disclosure
  • Not a replacement for formal support services

The Bottom Line

We train endlessly for the call.
We owe it to ourselves—and each other—to train for after the call too.

Ten minutes.
One conversation.
A stronger, healthier team.

Take care of yourself. Take care of your crew.

The world is a better place with you in it!
