Dust Storm Safety

Dust Storms Can Strike in Illinois

Dust storms and haboobs aren’t just a desert thing — they can happen here when strong thunderstorm winds kick up massive walls of dust and debris, causing sudden zero-visibility conditions that make driving extremely dangerous.

Key Safety Tips:

  • Driving? Slow down immediately, pull completely off the road, turn off headlights/taillights & A/C, and stay buckled up.
  • Outside? Get indoors right away and cover your nose/mouth.
  • Dusty air can trigger serious respiratory issues and carry bacteria/viruses.

Preparedness saves lives. Know the risks and have a plan.
